Couple of new dvd’s available at ACME Educational

July 7th, 2009

Here are two new DVD’s from Vinnie Versace. You can get them for a discounted price by pre-ordering – so hurry before the cost goes up!

The Lazarus Effect – how to take an out of focus image and bring it back into focus and Oz to Kansas 2.0- every black and white technique I know of. Shown, with actions and configurators. The Lazarus DVD comes with a configurator too. This four DVD tutorial is for anyone who has ever taken an image in which the focus was a wee bit “off”. Maybe you tried to photograph a waterfall and, regardless of your exposure and how carefully you set up your tripod and camera, the focus was a little too soft, or perhaps you have images that you know were in focus when you shot it them, but because of the type of sensor or the way the RAW file was processed, the sharpness you knew the lens could deliver is missing in the images on the screen.

This DVD not only teaches you how to bring detail back from both landscape (Pixels in the Mist) and portrait images (From Blur to In Focus), it also presents a new way of thinking about your images as well as a new approach to seeing and creating. If that’s what you would like to learn in about an hour, then this is the tutorial DVD for which you have been looking.

Return to Oz – Oz to Kansas 2.0: The Black and White on Black and White Conversions

Black and white conversion techniques are like politicians making election promises. Every one of them claims to be the penultimate solution to your needs. Regardless of their claims, usually, you find yourself still needing a solution that creates images that look like photographs and not like something the viewer sees as “something you did in Photoshop”.

The reality is that there is not just one way to convert an image from many colors to hues of gray. Every black and white conversion approach has some images on which it will work, and many others on which it will not.

“Oz to Kansas 2.0: The Black and White on Black and White Conversions” is the evolution of thought that began with “Welcome to Oz : From Oz to Kansas. How to convert an Image to Black and White Without Ever Leaving the RGB Color Space.” This Oz to Kansas 2.0 tutorial takes a practical applications approach to when, why and how to convert an image. In it, you will learn which methods give you the best results and when to choose a simple or a complex solution.

Vince is teaching at all of our Pixel Boot Camp Photography Workshops so get the DVD’s then give us a call and see what we can do for YOU!

Andy Katz added to three workshops…

June 28th, 2009

We are very pleased to announce the addition of Andy Katz to a select number of our Pixel Boot Camp Photography Workshops.

The Great Smoky Mountains
Vermont
The Hudson River Valley

The photographs created by Andy Katz have taken him around the globe. From the Old Country in Eastern Europe to the California wine country, which he now calls home, his subjects are as diverse as his travels and adventures.

The images in Katz’s books, A Portrait of Napa and Sonoma; Concannon: The First One Hundred and Twenty-Five Years; New Zealand: Sea, Earth, Sky; Private Reserve; Robert Mondavi Winery; The Heart of Burgundy; Tuscany and Its Wines; and Vineyard have been described by vintners, photographers, critics and other readers as breathtaking. His evocative work is featured in museums and galleries worldwide including his own in Boulder, Colorado and Healdsburg, California.

Katz discovered his love for photography at a young age. Admittedly, he had been chasing his classmates around the playground with his camera since as early as the third grade. But when he was 11, his father brought home a book of black and white portraits by the legendary Canadian photographer Yosuf Karsh. “It was as if a flash bulb went off in my soul. I was amazed. Karsh’s work was all large-format and his prints were so vivid you felt you could actually touch the persons skin. The tonality, the technique, it was all truly exquisite. I was mesmerized,” said Katz. How ironic that years later, Yosuf Karsh would count himself among the many proud collectors of Katz’s photos.

Since 1974, he has produced 10 books had his Photos on 6 million album covers which includes The Doobie Brothers and Dan Fogelberg . His images have been in ads for Mamiya camera, Contax camera and is now a spokesperson for Sony. His most recent project is a book on India. You can view his website here.

Best known for his black-and-white landscape photographs, he loves making images of solitary places, and recently did some shooting in Iceland, where he camped out in a Sami “lavo” tent on the very beach where Vikings first landed in 874 AD.

Original prints of Jean’s images have been exhibited internationally and acquired by collectors worldwide. Solo shows include the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Soho Photo Gallery in New York. Miele’s 2007 “Seeing Is Believing” black-and-white landscape show was the first solo exhibition by an American at Oslo’s “Fotografiens Hus” gallery. His work has been featured at the prestigious Photo London photography fair, and his photographs have appeared in thousands of publications, including recent articles in “Fotografi,” Norway’s premiere photo magazine, and in the Houston Center for Photography’s journal: “Spot.”

Jean (pronounced “Gene”) is also internationally known as a teacher whose digital darkroom workshops demystify digital technique and empower students to realize their own photographic vision. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Miele’s work encompasses exhibitions, commissioned work for clients, and a busy teaching schedule. He lives with his wife Carol and daughter Cally, and he travels often, continually adding images to several ongoing bodies of work.

Miele has taught for: Adobe Systems; Apple Computer; the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York; Fuji USA; the Maine Media Workshops; the Norwegian Fotografiakademiet, and many others. Finally Back Up…

June 15th, 2009

For those of you trying to access the site today, my apologies. Our hosting company had a connectivity issue – a fiber cut from what I was able to discern. While those things happen from time to time, they are nonetheless frustrating. Thank you all for your patience and please let us know if you have any questions about the workshops or sailings.
